Expending shafts are used in shafted winding applications, to unwind and/or rewind web material. These shafts expand to grip the inner diameter of a core, to move and place steadily the web material and control web tension.

The expanding shafts are mechanical or pneumatical cylindrical rods, which expand and increase their volume. First the shaft is inserted into the core of the web, then it expands to grip the inner diameter of the core of the web.
